BOOK DAY 2023-DÍA DEL LIBRO 2023

This year the Department of English has decided to focus on Comics and Graphic Novels. That’s why along the last week of April and along the first weeks of May the Department of English has worked on several activities together with the willing participation of our American assistant Carly and also the enthusiastic collaboration of Paz and Chuan (PIEE), who offered the students a workshop on «Animated musical videos» and another workshop on «Comics Onomatopoeias«. Thanks a lot to them, to the teachers involved and to those students who have participated in all these activities. Here below you can watch a video with a summary of the activities:

PROJECT ON AMERICAN AND SPANISH STEREOTYPES

Throughout the second term the Department of English has been working on another project together with our American assistant Carly. The aim was to work on April Fool’s Day from a different perspective.

The students have provided a list of stereotypes they have about the US and Carly has done an incredible research project showing evidence for their being true, false or semi-true. In return, students also have had to explain to Carly if her stereotypes about Spanish culture are true, false or semi-true. For this part, we have had the enthusiastic and valuable participation of some students currently studying in Ohio, our student Lucía Ponz‘s classmates this year, who have sent us their ideas about Spain in a video. 

Special thanks must be given to those American students in Ohio, to Lucía (our «intermediary») and to Carly, who have proved to be a great help to know the American culture closely. Here below you have a video with some of the activities done at school with the students:

 

VISIT TO «LA ALJAFERÍA»

2nd ESO students went on a guided tour in English to «La Aljafería» Palace last 29th March. They were in groups and had to complete several activities about «La Aljafería» and Harry Potter’s «Hogwarts». They had to combine their knowledge of Art and their knowledge of the English language in an intensive visit. You can click on the video below to see some photos of the visit:

END OF THE SECOND TERM IN ENGLISH

Students of English at Élaios had taken part in a lot of activities along this term, such as the trips to Whitstable (UK), the visits to the cinema and the one-day trips to visit «La Aljafería» and the «Parque del Agua«. 

Apart from those, English BRIT students had participated in the traditional Spelling Bee contests from 1st to 4th ESO, and a lot of English students have been awarded their diplomas of Oral Skills with their Chatterbox cards.

CINE EN V.O.S.E: «AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER»

On 26th January and on 9th February the English department offered 1st Bachillerato and 4th ESO students the possibility to go to the cinema and see «Avatar: The Way of Water» in English with Spanish subtitles. It has been a long time since this type of motivating activities was done at school because of the pandemic. So we hope to continue it in the near future.

 

                 

 

END OF TERM 2022-2023

Students of the English BRIT programme have shown their spelling skills in the Spelling Bee contests of the different subjects, in which Carly, our American assistant, has played an important role. We would like to congratulate the Spelling Bee winners and also the winners of the Diplomas of Oral Skills, who have proved their enthusiastic oral participation in English in the different subjects taught in English at school. 

Apart from that, this year we are really proud to announce our three creative winners of the «Ugly Sweater Contest«: Irene Joven, Celia Molpeceres and Marina Sotoca. Thank you very much to all those students involved. You cannot forget that all these activities depend on the envolvement of the students. Thanks a lot to the teachers who have helped to make it possible.

THANKSGIVING 2022

Last November students at Élaios celebrated Thanksgiving and learnt how important it is for the people in the USA. In some classes they even had the chance to know how Carly, our American assistant this year, used to celebrate it back home. What’s more, some students could watch the interview between Carly and Lucía, our 1st Bachillerato student in Ohio this year. In this interview they answered questions about life in Spain, life in the USA and questions about the traditions of Fiestas del Pilar and Thanksgiving.

ESCAPE ROOMS FOR 25th NOVEMBER 2022

Dentro del Plan de Convivencia e Igualdad del IES Élaios, y financiadas dentro de las Acciones pacto de estado contra la violencia de género 2022, del Ministerio de Igualdad y la DGA, el Departamento de Inglés del Élaios ha realizado (con Inspira, Asociación para la Convivencia) varias actividades de «escape room«, en inglés, con los estudiantes de 3º de ESO, sobre mujeres científicas. 

La «escape room» se llamaba «El Enigma de la Memoria de las Científicas» y tuvo lugar los días 24 y 25 de noviembre (conmemorando así el Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer), en inglés, con el alumnado de 3º de ESO en la Biblioteca del centro.

Además de las «escape rooms», en el recreo, la misma asociación y el Dpto. de Inglés han ofrecido a todo el alumnado interesado, dos talleres para la realización de «Chapas por la igualdad», uno en inglés y otro en español.

HALLOWEEN: «CORTOS DE TERROR»

El viernes 28 de octubre, durante el recreo, varios valientes alumnos de 1º y 2º de ESO pudieron participar en la muestra de cortos de terror que cuidadosamente seleccionó y organizó el PIEE con el depto. de Inglés en la biblioteca del centro, decorada para la ocasión. Con motivo de Halloween, se mostraron 3 cortos en inglés y en español y se explicaron algunos detalles sobre ellos. ¡Los alumnos se lo pasaron «de miedo»!
